Alternative Paths Toward a Social Actor Concept

چکیده

Over the course of analyzing data from a series of socio-technical ICT studies, we have developed a multi-dimensional concept of a social actor to guide qualitative data collection and analysis. Three information and communication technology (ICT) studies have been used to develop and refine the concept: a mid-1990's study of online information services use, a 4year study of intranet development and use, and a 5-year study of ICT use in collaborative networking among scientists in academia and industry. The social actor concept has been theoretically supported by institutionalist approaches. However, in our continuing effort to formalize it, we have found that alternative, and equally convincing, supporting theoretical explanations can be put forward using actor-network theory (ANT), as well as structuration theory. In this paper, we explain the social actor using ANT concepts and structuration theory concepts, and then contrast these with institutionalist concepts, emphasizing where ANT and structuration theory provide added value and suggest directions for further research and conceptual refinement.

Reconceptualizing Users as Social Actors in Information Systems Research

A concept of the user is fundamental to much of the research and practice of information systems design, development, and evaluation. Usercentered information studies have relied on individualistic cognitive models to carefully examine the criteria that influence the selection of information and communication technologies (ICTs) that Robert W. Zmud was the accepting senior editor for this paper...

Eleven groups of 6 familiar boys each (N = 165 dyads) met for 5 consecutive days to participate in play sessions and social-cognitive interviews. With a variance partitioning procedure, boys' social-cognitive processes were...

Gradual development of human-agent social relationship

To maintain sound social relationships between people and social actors including robots, embodied agents, and computers, both parties in any relationship should continue to have equal social positions. In other words, the social actor should serve as the human’s “teammate” (Fogg, 2003) and not be thought of as a “slave.” To enable the social actor to remain the human’s “teammate,” the human an...
